Happy early April, Jazz Pickles. I’ve been as busy as a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs lately as I plan to escape Bizarro International Headquarters next week for a bit of time off. Yes, even super-human cartoonists need time off from comedy from time to time, so I’ll be going where nothing is ever funny: Oklahoma. (more…)

When I do a gag about a touchy subject like a disability, I always ask myself, if I were in this condition, would I think it was funny? The answer here is a definitive yes. The gag doesn’t make fun of blindness, it simply features a blind person in an absurd situation through no fault of his own. I don’t anticipate getting any hate mail from this cartoon which is admittedly a disappointment. I love stupid hate mail. (more…)

I know that nobody is interested in Xmas anymore but I’ve been remiss in posting on this blog for the past week so I’m getting you caught up on what I’ve been up to in the cartoon wonderland in which I live.

If you’re like me (not a millionaire who buys cars for people on holidays) you’re likely very tired of the car commercials that encourage you to buy automobiles as gifts. If I saw a new Mercedes with a giant bow on it in the driveway of one of my neighbors on Xmas morning, I might take hostages. Or, at the very least, throw a couple of gift-wrapped bricks through the windows. (more…)

Many readers of this blog are not native English speakers and/or reside in other countries so they might not get this gag. It is based on an idiom that people use when there is a large issue that is purposely being ignored or avoided. For instance, let’s say Bob and Betty are a married couple whom you and your friends have known for years. You hear that Bob and Betty are divorcing, but you have already invited both of them to a party. They arrive individually, but Bob shows up in drag. This makes everyone uncomfortable, so all of the attendees ignore it and pretend it isn’t happening. That’s called “ignoring the elephant in the room.” Later in the party, Betty pulls a pistol out of her purse and shoots Bob. That’s called “assault with a deadly weapon,” but this cartoon has nothing to do with that. (more…)

Today’s cartoon mystified a few readers, but not many, I suspect. This one is a simple twist on a famous painting by Belgian surrealist, Rene Magritte. If you’ve seen it, you get the gag. If not, you probably don’t.

I think this gag is brilliant and I SO wish I could say I wrote it. Instead, it was written by a friend and colleague of mine, a very talented cartoonist in his own right, Dan McConnell. (more…)
