Fear of Farm Girls

Bizarro 05-17-15 hdrWEBBizarro is brought to you today by Alex Trebek Sighting.

I made a mistake in today’s Sunday comic and I didn’t catch it until it was too late to stop it from getting into print. I’ve posted the corrected version here but the inferior one is in papers all over the world today. In the version with the screw-up, the caption reads, “Farm Bizarro 05-17-15 WEBgirls, scarecrows and tin men, oh my!” I guess I was writing it correctly, instead of mimicking the way the similar line was said in the film, with the extra “and” between “farm girls” and “scarecrows”. Arrrrggghh. I know it’s no big deal but it bugs me and I wish I’d caught it sooner. On the bright side, there are still seven secret symbols to look for, which you can find more easily by clicking the image and making it larger.

I hope you had a dandy Valentine’s Day this weekend. Olive Oyl (seen here with her grandmother) and I went to Topanga Canyon to visit some friends and take a lovely hike. Afterwards, the four of us went to a small, out-of-the-way Thai restaurant and had dinner with The Edge (guitarist for U2). And by “had dinner with,” I mean that he was at the next table with his wife and daughter and did not acknowledge our existence. But still, it was as close to having dinner with The Edge as we’ll likely ever get, so it was fun.

My favorite part of this cartoon and the title panel are the drawings. The title panel art is a character I drew in one of my sketchbooks, which are full of strange things that I have no real use for in Bizarro, but I occasionally will use one for a title panel. (more…)

It has come that time in history when I am going to be forced to buy health insurance. Since I work for myself, I’ve no company policy of any kind that I can glom onto, and the only organization I belong to, the National Cartoonists Society, has no policy or discount rates, either. I’ve been without coverage for the past 12 years and have saved tens of thousands of dollars. But those days are gone. I have no idea where to get decent affordable catastrophic insurance and man, do I hate having to give money to the health insurance industry, something I consider to be more malignant than the Mafia. I guess that’s why the first joke posted here resonated with me. (more…)

Hell on Earth in a Can

Bizarro is brought to you today by Wheel of Fortune Reject.

Here at Bizarro Headquarters, CHNW and I have had day after week after month of new cans of worms. We were in LA on business about six weeks ago and she got a phone call from Florida saying her (previously completely healthy) dad had just arrived at the hospital in an ambulance and might not survive. (He’d gotten a wicked infection that he mistook for muscular backache and didn’t treat until it reached his brain and rendered him unconscious!) I had to stay in LA for the week to make my meetings, but she jumped the next plane and rushed to his side. I had to return to NYC to get back to my deadline schedule and was unable to join her. One complication led to another for the next six weeks and she just got home yesterday. I’m happy to say that pop-in-law is fine and will be going home any day now. But man, what a month and a half it has been! More worms than we knew what to do with and a truckload of cans for recycling. (more…)
