Before we get to the subject of tattoos, let’s start here: Many readers are already aware of my “Secret Symbols,” but some are not. I place little icons in almost all of my cartoons and put a small number above my signature to tell you how many to look for. That number is usually 3 or under but today it is 18. For a full list of my Secret Symbols, click on those blue words you just saw a second ago. Yes, Al Hirschfeld used to do something like this and I got the idea partly from him and partly from those “find the hidden things in this picture” games in books and magazines for children.

Bizarro 10-04-15 WEBEver wonder what those crazy stories in the Old Testament (or Torah) mean? Neither do I, but they are fun to do cartoons about and since it was supposed to have happened so long ago, very few people will say, “Too soon.” One might also wonder if this cartoon was created to mirror the current refugee crisis in the Middle East and Europe and the answer would be no, not directly. Pretty much any time one does a cartoon about escaping refugees, there’s going to be a group of refugees somewhere in the real world. Sadly, humans have a fairly consistent habit of treating each other horribly and keeping each other on the run.

Eternal Mistakes

The idea for this cartoon came directly from the many conversations we’ve had together in the comments section, Jazz Pickles, about the comedic value of unfortunate tattoos, be they misspelled or just baboon-ass ugly. It is a short hop from that conversation to wondering if any tattoo shops offer spell check and general aesthetic advice. Of course, not all tattooists have good taste or spelling skills above that of a dim 3rd grader, so I’m afraid you’d still be firmly in “buyer beware” territory. (more…)
