Ultimate Selfie

Even though this gag is not wordplay, it was a collaboration with my good buddy, Cliff Harris the King of Worldplay. If you’re not familiar with Oscar Wilde’s brilliant The Picture of Dorian Gray, this cartoon will likely fall flat. Go read it and come back.

Now that you’ve enjoyed this classic, you’ll be more sympathetic to the difficulties I had in illustrating this alternate, modernized version. It honestly didn’t occur to me until I started to draw this that the main keys to drawing an old person are in the face and posture. This cartoon necessarily eliminates both of those things. What I was left with was a wrinkly body, which is a difficult thing to draw in this form. I hope I did a good enough job with that to get the idea across.

Another thing that occurred to me in the making of this cartoon was that Wilde’s story could in some sense be a premonition of things to come. Selfies are mostly based on vanity and hedonism, which is a primary theme in Wilde’s novel. I’ve no doubt that Wilde would not be the least bit surprised at the look-at-me obsession that social media has become, nor the narcissistic mess the US has allowed to squat in the White House in recent years. (I’m not sure where the Apricot Assfruit keeps his portrait, but we all know he has one.)

What psychological insights did Wayno include in his cartoons last week and are they keeping him from aging? Let’s find out…

Speaking of vanity, what’s more attractive than a ripped rodent?

The word “privilege” comes from Old French words meaning “private law” because there were different laws for aristocrats and peasants. So, no, the world hasn’t changed much. And the aristocrats get away with more every day.

Tom’s favorite part of this game is to get the rock to the top then watch it roll down through town.

It also bears a striking resemblance to Michelangelo’s Pietà before he began sculpting.

In Wayno’s weekly blog post about this batch, he compliments you Jazz Pickles and your familiarity with architecture terms. Read it, then come back for the rest of this one!

So far, I’ve only managed to be my best me, which is a little disappointing. I’m still aiming at bestest, though.

That’s all the comedy we can stomach this week, Jazz Pickles. Thanks for holding your lunch down with us.
