Please Department

Today’s cartoon has an obvious political angle but what is it saying? I’ll be honest and admit that I don’t really know. I just thought it was kind of funny.

I wrote it a few weeks ago (or 40 minutes ago or ten years ago—in pandemic time, memories are moving targets) when calls to “defund the police” were rampant in the headlines. If I had to guess, I’d say that phrase scared some people away from voting for Democrats for fear that their town would no longer have a police department. It’s not a rational fear, but then, fear makes us less rational. The Trumps of the world know that.

I have a ton of opinions about this topic but I’m sick of politics. Instead, let’s talk about the art in the cartoon museum above.

Readers of my graphic novel, Peyote Cowboy, might recognize the two main characters presented as companion paintings at center right. To the left of them, just beyond the disgruntled museum guard, are two of our Bizarro Secret Symbols done in a kind of Georgio de Chirico style. In the far back, left corner of the museum is our Bizarro Bunny in a sort of Jeff whats-his-name style sculpture. Finally, at the right margin, another Secret Symbol appears in a 60s op-art style.

You didn’t think I’d go an entire post without mentioning Peyote Cowboy, I hope. The next episode posts on Tuesday and is titled, “Drunken Uncles.” If you’re not caught up to the story, you can do that here. Then I hope you’ll join me on Tuesday for the new episode and enjoy finding out to whom that title refers (and what their designated font looks like!

Now let’s find out what Wayno has been doing while locked in his Bizarro Cartoon Basement Clubhouse all week…

There’s a place for all of those kinds of vehicles—the Mariana Trench. Plenty of free parking forever.

I think my cat would really benefit from journaling but she just doesn’t seem to get it.

I’m not a big fan of Edison the human but Edison the chipmunk is adorable!

Hey! That bag was full when I put it in the evidence locker.

Don’t neglect to check out Wayno’s blog post this week about this batch of cartoons. For this one, he goes into some impressive scientific detail about his rendering of the opossums here.

What better way to end this week’s post than with a homemade sock puppet bar? Thanks for sipping Woolite with us, Jazz Pickles. If you’re enjoying our efforts and want to experience the joy of supporting the arts, please consider visiting some of the links below. We’ll be mighty grateful.

Until next time, be grateful, be kind to somebody, enjoy the moment now and then.
