Twenty Somethings

I’m Dan Piraro, the creator of the Bizarro newspaper comic. Each week, I post my Sunday Bizarro comic, then a short essay, then the past week’s Monday-Saturday Bizarro comics written and drawn by my partner, Wayno. He does a weekly blog post, too, and I highly recommend it.

Bienvenue, Pickles de Jazz. (French!)Thanks for stopping by. I’ve decided to start a new feature today, which will mean a little more work for me but we’ll see how it goes.

Each week, I’m going to be posting a Secret Symbols answer key for that week’s Sunday gag. If you get stumped, you can click the link and find the answers circled in red. The symbol search has become pretty popular and I get people desperate each week to find that last one they can’t seem to locate, so this will solve that. I’ll also be more likely to notice when I’ve miscounted and be able to tell you, so you don’t go nuts trying to find a symbol that doesn’t exist. (Sorry!) I will, however, only be creating a key for my weekly Sunday cartoon, so you’ll still be on your own with Wayno’s cartoons and can contact him if you’re losing sleep over one.

Regarding symbols: the pipe in the mouth of the stag in the title panel above does NOT count toward the seven Secret Symbols in today’s Sunday cartoon. The title panels are separate from the day’s cartoons because they’re just space fillers and some newspaper markets use them but most don’t, so I can’t include symbols from the title panel in the official count or it would not be correct in markets where it isn’t being published. Make sense?

Apropos of nothing, Olive Oyl and I have been enjoying a series on Netflix based on Michael Pollan’s terrific book, How to Change Your Mind.  It’s fascinating, eye-opening, and touching. I highly recommend it.

But not as highly as I recommend you follow me down into Wayno’s World and see what Bizarro cartoons he crafted for us last week…

There’s an unharvested pun about healthcare and wealthcare in there somewhere, but I’m not going to be the one to reap it.

Is it true that the world’s first ventriloquist was also a proctologist?

I humbly remind you that most syndicated cartoon features do not offer comics about people squeezing things in the shower. Here at Bizarro, we tackle the topics other cartoonists are afraid to touch.

I hope we pronounced that correctly.

I happened to google “goth” a bit just now and there seems to be no consensus on where it came from, who started it, what’s goth and what’s not, etc. When I started typing this, I thought it might be interesting but now I realize it isn’t.

Before you ask us what this one means, I’ll tell you that it doesn’t mean anything. It’s just one of those things you either find weirdly funny or you don’t. That’s why we call it “Bizarro” and not “Normalo.”

That’s the end of this week’s cartoon-a-looza. Thanks for sticking around to pack up the first aid tent. If you like the cut of our jib and that we don’t have a paywall or pop-up ads, please consider helping us keep it that why via one of the links below. We’ll feel less like suckers if you do.

Until next week, Q: How do you tell the difference between goths and Alice Cooper fans? A: The Alice Cooper fans are the ones with walkers.
