Thanks a Lava!

I’m Dan Piraro, the creator of the Bizarro newspaper comic, and this is my weekly blog post. The large Sunday Bizarro comic above is mine, as are the comments below. The past week’s Monday-Saturday Bizarro comics that follow were written and drawn by my partner Wayno, whose weekly blog post I highly recommend.

And here’s this week’s ANSWER KEY to my Sunday comic’s Secret Symbols.

————————————————————————————————————

Welcome, Jazz Pickles. How’s your year going so far?

I like the restful nature of January in contrast to the frantic pace of the year-end parade of holidays. All that socializing and family stuff is enjoyable, but by Jan 1, I’m ready to wander off for some alone time.

I have one more holiday to celebrate this week, however, but it’s easy and quiet. It’s Wayno’s and my 2,251st anniversary of our partnership!

That’s the number of Bizarro comics Wayno has completed since we began our official collaboration seven years ago this week. He came up with that number, and I trust his math.

I’ll be honest: I tried to calculate how many days there have been since January of 2018, minus the Sundays and accounting for Leap Years, but I arrived at a figure that looked more like the distance in inches from here to the Andromeda Galaxy. That’s the kind of creative relationship I’ve always had with math. (A couple of my math teachers wanted DNA samples from me to ascertain that I was not a lower life form.)

Wayno writes about his side of our comedy collusion in his latest blog post, describing it as, “…the best working relationship I’ve ever had.” I’m always gratified to hear that, and from my side of the cartoon fence, I wholeheartedly agree.

Since turning over the Monday-Saturday comics to my talented colleague, I’ve had more time for other creative projects like my graphic novel and writing. After over thirty years of creating seven original cartoons each week, I was ready for a change.

I worried about turning over my baby to someone else—my name and reputation were still all over it. But seven years later, I still feel I could not have made a better choice.

Wayno has been a dream to work with. We touch base a few times each week, review sketches and final art, and have literally never disagreed about anything important. Like a well-made commercial airliner, he has made thousands of daily flights without a single emergency landing or killing anyone on board. And all while, I’m back in first class drinking martinis. Thanks, pal!

Time to see where he flew in this week’s Bizarro comics…

They may look innocent, but those antique bulbs could burn ALL NIGHT!

Here in Mexico, we wax our cactuses.

The answer to your question is no, we will never run out of Magritte comics.

I can’t help but wonder if any gondoliers in Venice have ever dressed as the Grim Reaper.

My wife always hates when I chisel a note to myself in the middle of the night.

I suppose Captain Cotton Swab sees every problem as a waxy ear.

Ironman needs to get home to do some ironing, so we’ll wrap this up. Thanks for your jazziness, Jazz Pickles. If you like what we do and want to help us keep this site free of ads and clickcrap, please consider the links below. You’ll be sending us a smile in return for the ones we’ve given you.
