Words Escape Me
I’m Dan Piraro, the creator of the Bizarro newspaper comic. Each week, I post my Sunday Bizarro comic, then a short essay, then the past week’s Monday-Saturday Bizarro comics written and drawn by my partner, Wayno. He does a weekly blog post, too, and I highly recommend it.

I’ve titled this week’s post, “Words Escape Me” because sometimes words escape me. For instance, when I heard that the Supreme Court was planning to rescind a constitutional right for the first time in our nation’s history, the F-word escaped me without my intention, and at a volume louder than I expected.
I’m normally not one to run into the streets shouting about the sky falling but this is a huge turning point if it comes to pass, and an enormous step toward a theonomic totalitarian state. And a racist one at that. I say racist because the people driving this are rabid Trump fans, many of whom are admittedly racist white nationalists and without whom, Trump wouldn’t hold the power he does. Don’t kid yourself, it isn’t just women whose rights they want to deny.
The people who want Roe vs Wade overturned are part of a tiny minority of the U.S., and in a democracy, the majority would be protected from their radical views. But this same minority is also in control of most state legislatures, enough election boards to assure that Trump supporters fill every seat, and the U.S. Supreme Court, so they will have their way. If you think election boards would not rig a U.S. election, you’ve not been following the news since 1/6/21. It won’t be the end of the world but it will be the end of democracy in the U.S.
If you’ve not seen the excellent Hulu series, The Handmaid’s Tale, watch it. If you plan to be living in the U.S. after 2024, it will be an excellent primer.
I’m sorry to soil my humor blog with such a dark post and I hope not to do it again soon. Those of you who read these mini-essays of mine seem to enjoy that I share myself whether it relates to our cartoons or not, so I’ll continue to do so. It’s just who I am, I kinda can’t help it. Thanks for putting up with me.
I’m a big advocate for the healing power of humor, so let’s chuckle at some of Wayno’s Bizarro cartoons from the week! I’m ready for some frown-upside-down turning!
Congratulations are due to Wayno for drawing the first-ever cartoon desert island without a palm tree. His creativity is boundless!

I think this joke is fun but Wayno isn’t a fan of it anymore. He gets into some pretty rugged self-deprecation over it in his blog post this week. Have a look and leave him a consoling comment if you’re so inclined.
Chameleons are super cool, no doubt, but in terms of camouflage, Octopuses make them look like a kid in a dimestore Halloween costume. Do yourself a favor and watch some YouTube videos of the “mimic octopus.” Of course, even the most boring breed of octopus is more fascinating than almost any other non-cephalopod on the planet, so you can’t go wrong falling down that YouTube rabbit hole.
As Wayno mentions in his blog post this week, he didn’t know about the Supreme Court thing when he submitted this cartoon but it is eerily prescient now.
I’ve always wanted to try one of those things but my tinnitus is so loud that I’d not be able to ignore it. Being in one of those pods now would drive me nuts.
Wayno and I would like to remind readers that we are not categorically against either bagpipes or men in skirts. We do not, however, approve of the wearing of Crocs outside of the privacy of your own home.
