Not a Post
I’m Dan Piraro, the creator of the Bizarro newspaper comic. Each week, I post my Sunday Bizarro comic, a short essay, and then the past week’s Monday-Saturday Bizarro comics written and drawn by my partner Wayno, whose weekly blog post I highly recommend.
And here’s this week’s ANSWER KEY to my Sunday comic’s Secret Symbols.
Hiya, Jazz Pickles. Thanks for these moments.
You may notice that for two weeks in a row, my Sunday cartoon has been about a police lineup. That’s because last week’s cartoon (and Bizarro Jazz Pickle Brian G) inspired this one. Thanks, Brian!
You may also notice that I appear in both police lineups. Or, at least, my digital facsimile does. I explained why I cast myself in these roles in my post last week.
If the cartoon above confuses you, it’s probably because you didn’t pay attention in your history of surrealism class. Both Wayno and I are fans of the surrealist painter René Magritte. We’ve both done numerous cartoons about him and his work, many of which include the famous floating face apple.
Bizarro is known in some circles for its Secret Symbols. I had twelve of them when Wayno joined me in 2018, and after a couple of years of faithful service, he asked if he could design one to add to the stable.
After a big fight and lots of tears, I agreed. We proudly added the Pipe of Ambiguity, which was inspired by this Magritte painting. (Caption is French for, “This is not a pipe.”)
Earlier this year, we created some T-shirt designs for the Bizarro section of the King Features shop, one of which is based on that pipe painting. See all three new shirts here.
All of that contributed to the inspiration for this cartoon. With that bit of info, you should be able to spot the correct perp who was selling phony pipes. (Hint: it isn’t the handsome guy in the bunny shirt.)
We segue now to the surreal cartoons of my able partner Wayno…
You can taste the banality. It’s vanilla.
That’s not even enough time to train someone.
My favorite mix tape was titled, “Pagoda the Party!”
From his virtuoso rendition of the theme from the Mickey Mouse Club.
“Might save your life, mister. We’re easier to outrun if we’re drunk.”
We’ve come to the end of our ropes at this week’s comedy endurance trials. Thanks for sweating it out with us. If you like what we do, please help us keep this site free of a paywall or ads via the links below. We’ll be as happy as those little birds that helped Cinderella make her ball gown in the Disney film.
